2010 INTERSCHOLASTIC TEAM RESULTS

Toronto Interscholastic Team Wins Regional’s
In March 2010 the Toronto Intersholastic team went to compete at the USPA Interscholastic Regional’s at Gardener Town Polo Club in Newburgh, New York.  This year’s team is Ryley Begg, Maggie Massalin, Andrew Begg and spare Jack Venhuizen.  In their first game on Saturday the Toronto team (coached by Scott Weir) beat the Yale team 27 - 15 advancing them to the finals on Sunday.  Another Canadian team, from the Cedar Valley Polo Club (coached by Phil Vanderburgt)  also won their first game which put them in to the finals on Sunday against Toronto.  In the Championship game Toronto beat Cedar Valley  27 - 18.

The Toronto team then advanced to the Interscholastic Nationals which were held on April 21 at Cornell University.  Unfortunately the team did not win the National Championship Title, however Coach Scott Weir was very happy with the teams performance stating that they were a relatively young team in this tournament, and with a little more experience should, in the future, become one of the best teams in the league.

2009 INTERSCHOLASTIC TEAM RESULTS

In February the Toronto boys interscholastic team of Brendon Stenzel, Ryley Begg and Arthur Strahl won the U.S.P.A. North Eastern Interscholastic Regionals at Cornell University, which advanced them to the National Championships.

The U.S.P.A. National Championships took place on April 15- 18, at Brushy Creek Ranch in Texas.  Unfortunately the boys lost in the 5th round of shoot-outs in overtime, making this the first year since 2005 that Toronto has not captured the Championship title.

2008 RESULTS

In February 2008 Canada sent two women’s interscholastic teams, one from the Toronto Polo Club and one from the Cedar Valley Polo Club, to compete at the United States Polo Association’s North Eastern Interscholastic Regional.  This took place at Yale University in Connecticut, and was the qualifier for the USPA National Interscholastic Championships.  The Cedar Valley team won the qualifier and advanced to the National Championships.  This was the Cedar Valley women’s team’s first year playing at the interscholastic level, and to win the Regional at Yale was a huge accomplishment.   The winning team was Rachel Beretta, Caitlyn Phillips and Emma Goodman.   The girls were a great representation for Canada.

For the third year in a row a Canadian boy’s interscholastic team has won the United States Polo Association’s Interscholastic Championship title.  This year’s team was Cody Offen (Toronto), Brenden Stenzel (Toronto), Riley Begg (Toronto) and alternate Arthur Strahl (Cedar Valley).   There were over 40 interscholastic teams entered from across the United States, and only one Canadian team.  Winning their Regional qualifier back in February, the boys advanced to the Nationals in April at Brushy Creek Ranch in Texas, where they took the field by storm and brought home the cup!

Not since the 1970’s & early ‘80’s, when the Sifton brothers, Todd Phillips and Dave Offen dominated the interscholastic arena, have Canadians had such a strong presence at the interscholastic level.  We have much to be proud of with our young Canadians, and if we keep the youth programs in Canada going then hopefully we will have this kind of success for years to come!

SPRING IS IN THE AIR!

Now that the nice weather is finally upon us, we are playing club polo at the outdoor polo arena at Bancroft Farm every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.  For game times call the hotline (905) 888-7656.  If you haven’t yet dropped by, then come over and check out the major renovations to the Bancroft Farm ‘Polo Shack’.  We now have a fantastic clubhouse for parties and for hanging out after polo.  The Polo Shack was put to it’s first test on April 18 for Scott’s surprise birthday party.  Despite the cold and rainy weather outside, the new clubhouse comfortably accomodated the 70+ guests and the asado/ party was a success!

Interscholastic National Championships

The Toronto Interscholastic team unfortunately did not win the National Championship Title at this year’s USPA Interscholastic finals in Texas on April 22-25.  Despite their incredible win at the Regionals at Cornell University in March, the team was not quite as succesful in winning the Nationals.  Coach Scott Weir said the team of Ryley Begg, Maggie Massalin and Andrew Begg played very well, however they are a young team compared to many of their competitors, and once they gain a little more experience playing together should, in the future,  be one of the best teams in the league.

FALL/ WINTER SCHEDULE FOR POLO

Now that summer has finally arrived (in September!) we are going to continue to play on the grass for a week or two more, until it gets too cold and/or rainy.  Club polo will continue to be played Tuesday & Thursday nights at Fox Den, however as it is now starting to get dark by 7:00pm, we need to start games at 5:00pm.  We will play club polo at Alliston this Saturday.

Once we’re finished playing on the grass we will switch over to the outdoor arena at Bancroft Farm.  There we will play Club polo on Wednesday nights at 5:00pm, and on Saturdays and Sundays if the weather is nice.

Our Indoor polo season will officially start the week after Thanksgiving, Saturday October 17.  We will play at the Fox Den Farm indoor arena on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.  If we are fortunate to get some warm Saturdays at the end of October then we will play at the Bancroft Farm outdoor arena, but weeknight club polo will be played in the arena at Fox Den after Thanksgiving.

Weeknight Club polo during the winter season starts at 7:00pm (6:00pm if there are enough players available for an early game) and at noon on Saturdays.  We have one indoor tournament per month, and we will e-mail out the indoor tournament schedule shortly.

If you have any further questions please give me a call,

April 28, 2009 NEWS

 Dear members,

Please note that this is the last week that we will run our winter schedule of Monday & Wednesday night club polo.  Starting next week, May 4, we will switch over to the summer club polo schedule of Tuesdays, Thursdays & Saturdays.  All games, starting next week, will be played at the outdoor arena at Bancroft Farm until the grass fields are ready to play on.  We will no longer be playing in the arena at Fox Den, so please make sure your lockers are cleared out (especially of any food that may be in them).  Also, please leave your locker open so that we can clean everything up for next winter.

Toronto Polo Club Food & Beverage service

 Dear members,

At the last Annual General Meeting of the members it was approved that a flat annual fee for food and non-alcoholic beverages will be charged to each playing member of the Toronto Polo Club.  This fee will be $250 per member, with a $500 fee for families comprised of 2 members or more.  This flat fee per member will make it much easier for us to recoup our food and beverage costs each year, and will also allow the Toronto Polo Club to continue to offer  food and non-alcoholic beverages to members, as well as clean washroom and clubhouse facilities throughout the season.  We hope to have everyone’s compliance with the food & non-alcoholic beverage flat fee program, and will be invoicing each member before the start of the outdoor season.

On another note, the Toronto Polo Club strictly prohibits the consumption of alcohol by any player before or during their game.  The club has a ZERO TOLERANCE policy on this rule, and any player suspected of playing under the influence of alcohol will be strictly dealt with.   The Toronto Polo Club does not condone the consumption of alcohol when driving any vehicle, of any nature, to or from any Toronto Polo Club property.  As well, please remember that members are responsible for their grooms and guests, and minors are strictly prohibited from consuming alcohol while at any of the Toronto Polo Club facilities

FEBRUARY 16, 2009 NEWS

Unfortunately, after last weeks sudden thaw and meltdown, the arena at Fox Den Farm was badly damaged due to severe flooding.  Crews are working to repair the footing, however it means a  temporary stop to all indoor arena activities at Fox Den Farm.  We are hoping to get things back up and running as soon as possible, but we have had to postpone the Polar Bear Cup tournament (scheduled for Feb. 21-22) to a later date.

There will be snow polo played at the Bancroft Farm outdoor polo arena on Saturday & Sunday at 2pm.  The ponies do need to be fitted with special shoes to be able to play on the snow, so for more information on required shoeing, or to sign up to play or lease horses please contact Brian at Bancroft Farm (905) 727-6996.  Everyone is welcome to come out and watch the games, there will be hot chocolate (and hot toddies!) in the polo shack while the games are on!
