Team Canada News
Friday, May 2nd, 2008Every three years is the Federation of International Polo World Cup Championship (FIP) in which teams from all over the World compete to see who can win the World Championship Title. Countries are divided up in to zones. Canada is in ‘Zone A’ which is North and Central America. A country must first win its zone division before it is eligible to compete in the World Championship zone playoffs (the Finals).
- The first team to represent Canada in a Federation of International Polo (FIP) World Cup Championship was in 2001 in Sydney, Australia.
- Canada’s second entry in the FIP World Cup saw our team competing against Dominican Republic, USA and Mexico in the Zone A (North and Central America) Playoff Tournament in Juarez, Mexico in May 2004. Unfortunately, Canada did not advance to play in the World Championship finals in Chantilly, France in September 2004.
- At the 2007 FIP World Cup Zone A Playoffs in Mexico, Team Canada beat the Dominican Republic, Guatemala and the United States to advance to the World Championship finals, which were played in April/ May 2008, again in Mexico. The team that made it to the final playoffs was Marcelo Abbiati (5 goals) from Alberta, Brandon Phillips (5 goals) from Ontario, Kyle Fargey (2 goals) from Alberta, and Robert Stenzel and Cody Offen (both 2 goals) from the Toronto Polo Club. Please click on the 2007 press release for more details of their win.
- Team Canada travelled to Mexico in April 2008 to play in the final playoffs for the FIP World Championships. The Team unfortunately were not quite strong enough to beat Chile and take home the Championship Title. Please see the following press releases for more details;
