The Polar Bear Cup
Thursday, April 9th, 2009The Ontario Polo Tour’s “Polar Bear Cup” was played on April 4 & 5 at the Toronto Polo Club’s Fox Den Farm indoor arena. Six teams were entered, with players hailing from the Toronto Polo Club and the Cedar Valley Polo Club.
The consolation game Champions was the team of Annabel Begg (Toronto), Takuji Makino (Toronto) and Neal Claasson.
The Championship game was a close and exciting final. Both teams were well matched and well mounted. The teams were Arthur Strahl (Cedar Valley/ Toronto), Penny Davey (Toronto) and Andrew Begg (Toronto) vs. Ryley Begg (Toronto), Jen Gaylor (Toronto) and Ali Al-Hamid (Toronto). By the end of the fourth chukker the score was tied. Since most players had used up all their horsepower the teams decided to do a shoot-out to determine the tournament winner. In the end it was Ryley’s team that took home the cup.
Penny Davey was chosen as the tournament MVP. She played far and above her handicap, helping her team to the championship game.
Special thanks to Scott Weir and Brenden Stenzel for Umpiring, and to Caitlyn Phillips for picking up the games!
